Reviews, Low Prices, High Fun

When you think about hoverboards, what do you think of?

YouTube fail videos?

Explosions?

Fires?

News stories?

Unfortunately, too many people think negative things when they imagine a cheap hoverboard. And that’s because the news has been bad.

But there is good news...

All that bad news is in the past.

Lately, these toys have been making a comeback. They’ve been slowing rebuilding the trust they lost and finding new lovers of this fun and unique electric toy.

Safety is the key to that increase. You’ll notice that each new cheap hoverboard comes with a UL certification as part of its feature. Do you know what that UL sticker tells you?

It tells you that the toy has passed the safety regulations and is no longer prone to fires or faults.  That’s the good news. These new cheap hoverboards are safer and better than ever.

What is an Affordable Hoverboard?

Don’t let the word ‘cheap’ fool you. These new options might be low on price, but they’re high on features and safety.

These toys can range from as low as $150 to as high as $1500-$2000. That price range puts a bad connotation on cheap hoverboards. What you should expect to find is that a cheaper hoverboard is a good starter board, meant to be fun, safe, and accessible to anybody looking to get into the sport.

Cheap Hoverboard Reviews

We’ve rounded up some of the lowest priced options on the market.

And we’ve done the hard work for you. Let us compare some of the better options and let you decide on the perfect cheap hoverboard for you.

Veeko Self-Balancing Scooter – the Safest and Cheapest Hoverboard

For your money, you can’t go past the Veeko brand. Its reputation precedes it as being one of the best in the cheap hoverboard market.

And that’s because you’ll find all Veeko boards are extremely safe, each with a UL certification to verify its credibility.

This self-balancing scooter has a 2.5 hour run time with the ability to climb up to 15 degree inclines at a cruising speed of 6mph.

While 2.5 hours isn’t a lot of time, it does manage to get you through the day if you’re using it sparingly.

The whole board is lightweight at just 22lbs for the entire unit. Carry it with you as you travel downtown or walk from the bus stop to work. It can handle up to 225 lbs. at a normal load capacity. And the 350W dual motors really shine at handling the terrain.

It does not rank among the high-end boards, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth buying as a first-time user. Experienced riders might find it slow and lacking in power.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
    Short riding time.

What we love

  • check-circle-o
    Great power.
  • check-circle-o
     Lightweight board.
  • check-circle-o
    Powerful motors for its size.

ExtremePowerUS Boards - for under $200

We think this ExtremePowerUS brand demonstrates that you don’t need to shell out a grand on an electric toy. You only need to find one that serves your needs.

This board is on the smaller side with a 6.5” wheel base. That means it should be designated for younger riders, although the load capacity does handle up to 200lbs. If it had a larger wheel base, you’d expect better performance, but for the 6.5”, it still does pretty good.

The charge time is 2.5-3 hours, which isn’t the best out there. But plug it in overnight and that won’t affect your riding time at all.

You will manage to get between 9-12 miles from a single charge, and that does impress those who have tried out the board. It seems that the lighter frame and smaller wheels don’t chew up as much power as the larger models.

Is it the best model? No, but it’s the best model we’ve seen for under the $200 mark. Budget-friendly and family fun; that’s a combination we can get behind.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
Perfect sized board for younger riders
  • times-circle
Great range from a single charge.

What we love

  • check-circle-o
Small board with only small amount of power.
  • check-circle-o
    Not great off-road.

SagaPlay F1 Self-Balancing Scooter – Sleek and Cool Off-Road Board

This board is built to be ridden. And ridden wherever you need it to go.

The non-slip pedals feel rock-solid while the fat tires give it an excellent grip on rough terrain. Take it on grass, up hills, and over gravel with ease. The 6.5” tires aren’t the largest you can get, but these tires seem to be made with super glue with the way they stick to the course.

The fast charging technology lets you get a full charge faster, and ride this board up to 9 miles away from your base without losing speed or power. The 250W dual motors have enough oomph to push you up 15-degree inclines, over pathways, and through the park.

The UL certification (just like all other brands we list here) means this board has undergone over 150 individual tests to prove it is safe for children as young as 8 to ride.

The rubber guards on the wheels also ensure that though you might play hard, your ride doesn’t have to show it. Save your board with the extra padding for the bumps along the way.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
Lightweight motors don’t put out enough power.

What we love

  • check-circle-o
    Great off-road capabilities
  • check-circle-o
    Good padding and protection.

Spadger Bluetooth – Futuristic Design

Spadger-Hoverboard

One look at this board and you’ll feel like you’re riding a much more expensive ride. The sleek lines and angled edges give this an enviable look.

But it’s more than just looks. 6.5” wheels powered by high output dual motors can give you a great ride. And that ride can last even longer with over 2 hours of riding time provided by just one normal charge.

This board actually has more than you’d expect. Listen to your favorite tunes with a Bluetooth speaker. Light up your way with an LED lighting systems. You’d expect less, but you get more. We always like hearing that.

We also like hearing stats like handling 18-20 degree inclines, 7mph top speed, and a relatively short 1-2 charging time.

Spadger offers a unique after-sales service to make sure that you are completely satisfied with your purchase. But with most online customers reviewing this as an excellent cheap hoverboard, we’re pretty sure, you’ll be completely satisfied right out of the box.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
Poor sound quality on the Bluetooth speake

What we love

  • check-circle-o
    Sleek design.
  • check-circle-o
     Great LED lights
  • check-circle-o
    Quick charging time.

Koowheel Balancing Board – Cheap and Reliable

Part of the appeal of this brand is their renown for making a wide variety of boards. They don’t just handle these electric boards.

They also specialize in skateboards, scooters, electric bikes, and other fun personal vehicles.

This particular brand does satisfy your need for a reliable board without a costly price tag attached.

You’ll get exactly what you’re looking for: a fun toy that is safe and enjoyable for the whole family.

The coolest, by far, is the light up feature in dark places. Should you ever find yourself in a dimly lit area, the sensors on board detect the low light and activate the LED headlights. That’s smart and intuitive, and it’s a great deal for a cheap hoverboard.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
    Lightweight power
  • times-circle
    lightweight wheels feel cheap.

What we love

  • check-circle-o
    Extremely affordable board
  • check-circle-o
    LED lighting system.

Eyourlife Smart Board – Safer than you expected

EjoyLife-Hoverboard

Most companies would tell you to lower your expectations if the price tag is too little. At Eyourlife, they tell you that you’re not expecting enough.

That’s why they’ve loaded their board with more than enough feature to satisfy you and your whole family.

Look out for a 6.5mph top speed, a range of 6.2-12.4 miles on a single charge, and up to 15 degree inclines on rougher terrain than other boards can handle.

The folks at Eyourlife understand that you’re looking for a board that lasts as long as you do. That’s why, as part of their certification process, they go the extra mile. They perform 10 ton crush tests and drop tests on their products, because they don’t expect you to be soft on your board.

They give it the full experience and more to satisfy their desire to give you a safe and sturdy board.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
    Longer 3-4 hour charging time
  • times-circle
Quickly wears out on rougher terrain

What we love

  • check-circle-o
    Sturdy design
  • check-circle-o
Great range on the single charge.
  • check-circle-o
    Good incline range
  • check-circle-o

Hoverheart Two-Wheel  Bluetooth – Bling Bling on a Board

Get the board that looks much more expensive than it actually is. You don’t have to advertise that you spent less when you buy the Hoverheart brand board.

The metallic chrome finish makes this board seem gaudy and expensive, neither of which it is.

The flash features simply look pricey, while you can smile knowing you paid much less than other riders would.

The small 6.5” are ideally suited to a smaller rider. The Bluetooth speaker and multiple LED lights add to the fun for any younger enthusiast looking to be the coolest kid on the block. The plastic-molded frame and lightweight design are perfect for a gentle ride on a warm summer’s day.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
    Plastic frame seems flimsy
  • times-circle
Short range of less than 7 miles.
  • times-circle
    Not the classical model

What we love

  • check-circle-o
    Bluetooth speaker and LED lights.
  • check-circle-o
    Flashy exterior

ORKAN Certified 2 Wheel Scooter – Excellent Battery Life

Orkan knows that the worst feeling in the world is picking up your ride, switching it on, and nothing happens.

That’s why they designed their version of the board to have an excellent battery life. Even after resting idle for days, it still is capable of going up to 9 miles on a single charge.

They even created a smarter system to preserve battery life. Should you remain idle for more than a few minutes, the battery automatically powers down to reduce wasted energy which could be better-used riding.

Small LED lights and a gentle 6.5” wheelbase make this perfect for smaller riders. The battery life solution would be better suited to older riders though, who would benefit from hours of play on a single charge. We’re not sure the feature is best offered to younger riders who won’t have the stamina for a full ride.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
Longer battery life comes at the expense of motor strength.

What we love

  • check-circle-o
High testing on the battery capacity
  • check-circle-o
    Good self-managing features
  • check-circle-o
    UL Certified Safe Battery

Skque L1.1 Series – Best for just a bit more money

This board doesn’t seem to fit in with its surroundings. That’s because most people wouldn’t understand how much you can get under the $300 price tag.

This Skque comes from a line of electric boards that range different skills and riders. This is the smaller 6.5” version, although there are bigger versions available.

The faster charging time comes from the safety tests and rigorous procedures it had to meet in order to get the UL certification. That does mean it’s a 100% safer battery in the board.

The Skque has a load capacity of 265lbs and a top speed of 7.5mph. That doesn’t seem high, but for the size board, that’s an impressive number. You wouldn’t want a small child able to reach faster speeds than that.

The advertised 1-2 charging time is pretty accurate and the range of 12.5 miles is impressive for that quick a charge. 2 x 350W motors power the board along at a pretty powerful pace.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
Slightly more expensive than other brands.
  • times-circle
    Is not the fastest model
  • times-circle
    Not the classical model

What we love

  • check-circle-o
    Extremely quick charging time.
  • check-circle-o
    Powerful 350W motors.
  • check-circle-o
    Multiple versions available
  • check-circle-o
    Long 12.5 mile range

Segway miniPRO – Not cheap but not to be ignored

Segway, a world leader in electric vehicles, have created their own version of a Segway hovering board. This miniPRO does what you need it to do, and more.

The first thing you’ll notice is the extended knee supports, a handy addition for making quick turns and speedy maneuvers. Its non-slip footpads give you better stability on the road.

The large 10.5” air-filled tires give you a smooth ride over any terrain from gravel, to grass, to pathways and parks

. The Bluetooth connectivity lets you adjust the speed control, customize your lights, give you remote control operation, and do firmware updates as Segway releases them.

This is NOT for the first-time rider. We would not recommend this as a toy for your young children. It’s too expensive and loaded with goodies to give to an untested rider. In fact, it’s probably best enjoyed by adults and youth.

What we dont love

  • times-circle
    Very pricey for introductory model.

What we love

  • check-circle-o
Extremely great range, power, and agility
  • check-circle-o
Fast top speed and excellent maneuvering
  • check-circle-o
Large tires for smooth ride over every terrain
  • check-circle-o
    UL Certified Safe Battery

What Is a Cheap Hoverboard?

The name is completely misleading, and we’re pretty certain that was done on purpose. Take a board, add two separate independent motors and allow a sensor to detect the weight of the rider while standing on the board. That weight determines the wheels direction, speed….blah blah blah.

What we don’t often mention is just how FUN these boards are! You don’t notice other toys the way you would with these fun toys. One try and you’re completely hooked. You try to pull tight turns, get a maximum speed, and cruise around the neighborhood in style. Just try to hop off after one turn. We dare you.

What makes a hoverboard a good product?

This is a pretty frequent question.

The word ‘cheap’ doesn’t mean bad quality. You can certainly find a huge range of boards online from anywhere between $200-$2000. Cheap boards are less expensive but still provide the fun and excitement of a larger board. You could even find boards online for around $99.

What makes the trend safer now is the UL rating. In early 2016, UL started introducing a rating specifically for self-balance scooters. That rating has meant that any brand, any price, and any model board can be equally safe and secure against fires and explosions.

What to Look Out For When Buying An Affordable Model

Regardless of the cost, what should you be looking for? What features do you need? And what can you avoid?

QUALITY

The first aspect we look for is the quality of the board. Is it made with good materials? Is it designed to handle rough treatment? Kids play rough, and if the board can’t take it, it’s not worth the purchase, at any price.

RANGE

The next thing we look for is the range. An electric toy is only as good as long as it’s powered up. You should expect a range of anywhere from 5 miles to 12.5 miles on the higher end. Anything more and you’re likely to find an expensive brand.

But this all depends on what your intentions are. Do you want to ride it to work? Are you looking for a quick trip to school? Or maybe it’s just an afternoon toy to ride around the neighborhood.  Let that determine what range you need, and what range is too much or too little for your enjoyment.

TERRAIN

While all boards can handle a road or a pathway, sometimes, the road isn’t good enough. You might want to take your ride off the beaten path, literally! You can do that with a good set of tires and sturdy, rugged motor.

There are plenty of options that can ride smoothly over grass, hills, and even gravel. It takes a powerful motor, but that can drag the battery and affect the overall range of the board.

SPEED

Alright, let’s talk speed. Yes, you will want to see how fast you can go on the board. And there are some boards that have great top speeds of almost 15 mph.

But that won’t do for a smaller or less experienced rider. It’s best to find a brand that has a speed governor, or an adjustable speed limit that you can control.

Once the rider is more experienced, then, by all means, let them go fast. All brands list their max speeds, but not all brands offer the ability to adjust the top speed.

BATTERY

Your battery life is also key. Although the range gives you a good idea of how powerful the battery is on the board, it’s the charging time that matters as well.

When the UL certification came into effect, battery charging times reduced because of the improved battery manufacturing.  Look for a charging time that doesn’t require an overnight plug-in. 1-2 hours is the norm, although some cheaper brands might have times as high as 3-4 hours.

LOAD CAPACITY

And we always look at the load capacity on the board. This gives us a good indication if the board is designed with children riders in mind, or if adults can enjoy the ride as well.

The load capacity also lets you know what sort of range you’ll get with larger riders. Usually, the load capacity is around 100kgs (220lbs) for an average cheap hoverboard. The miniPRO by Segway is one exception, with a great capacity of 420lbs!

Are Cheap Hoverboards on Amazon Safe?

Ok, the elephant in the room is that Amazon had once pulled all cheap hoverboards off their site due to safety concerns. And for good reason too! You’ve probably seen all the press about explosions and fires. Amazon’s pulling of the board led to a huge decrease in demand and the decline of the trend in general.

But that’s all changed since early 2016. The UL rating has changed all that. Every board on Amazon must be certified with the UL rating, which is only gained by passing over 150 safety tests with the battery and motor safety concerns.

So, once the internet retail giant starting allowing boards back online, the trend has taken off again. If Amazon says it’s ok, that just opens the floodgates for all brands to get their own boards on the market again. Prepare for another huge uptick in the purchase of these once-dangerous electric toys.

Free Shipping?

Just a quick note on this. Don’t just look for the cheapest hoverboards and free shipping.

You may find a great price for a cheap hoverboard on eBay or somewhere else online, but a huge shipping charge can quickly add up and tack on a huge cost.

But a word of warning; don’t let the free shipping that some vendors off sway you. You should make an informed decision, and some brands simply add their shipping price into the product. There’s really no such thing as free lunch (or shipping).

As a reference, anything below $190, check the overall ratings and features of the board. Don’t let a $5 difference make a decision from a good board to a bad one.

Should I Buy a Cheap Hoverboard?

In a word:

YES!

You should absolutely get started on the fantastic and fun trend. And why, you may ask?

  • If you’ve never ridden before, it’s a great way to introduce yourself to the sport.
  • If you’re budget conscious, you can still have a great source of entertainment without breaking the bank for a great toy.
  • If the board has a UL certificate, there’s no excuse as to why you shouldn’t trust the brand, even though it might have a smaller price tag.
  • If you’re not interested in the absolute newest and sickest brand on the market, you can still enjoy the same ride that any other brand offers you.
  • If you just want to find something that offers good value for money, there’s no reason why a cheap hoverboard on Amazon can’t satisfy your needs.

Where to Ride a Low Price Hoverboard

Concerned about where you can ride a very cheap hoverboard? That’s fair, because the laws of each country, state, and city vary greatly.

Places like New York City and the UK have banned any motorized personal vehicles on their sidewalks. California introduced a law that all riders in a public place must be over the age of 16. Australia only just recently lifted their nation-wide ban on the boards due to safety concerns.

It does depend on where you live so please check your local council and state laws. Most of the time, you’re safest on private property or wearing the appropriate safety gear for your experience.

But none of that should stop you from having the best fun you can have on two wheels. Enjoy your cheap hoverboard responsibly, and you’ll have endless fun for a long time to come.
